Abigail’s Fodder for Thought – Wait, what WINTER?!

Fodder trailer at WDE

It seems like fall is flying by me this year. Last I recall, it was September and I was gearing up for a month of trade shows and traveling through the glorious autumn weather to enjoy what other folks experience (outside of New England). Growing up in Maine and living in Connecticut now, fall has always been a favorite of mine. The leaves are changing, I can order hot coffee instead of iced, scarves and coats come out of the closet and I can enjoy an afternoon outside without feeling like I’m melting. It’s that homey time of year when you move from the outdoor fire pit and BBQ to the inside fire place with warm apple cider—yum!

4-H Fair Weekend Re-Cap

tolland 4-h fair

You may not be able to believe it, but in many spots around the country, summer vacation is winding down and kids are thinking about going back to school in a few weeks. Despite the bittersweet end to summer, however, there’s lots to look forward to in the coming months, including one of my favorite times of the year—fair season! In fact, many towns and counties around the country have already started hosting their annual 4-H county fairs and here in Connecticut, this past weekend brought the Tolland County 4-H Fair to town, a hit with families and locals every year! I serve as an advisor to the 4-H kids who organize this fair. I help to coordinate and run the goat show for this fair and have been involved for over 12 years (wow…I feel old typing that!), and this year was one of the best fairs I can remember.

Abigail’s Fodder for Thought – All-Natural Seed Prep

Fodder system with HPS lighting

Does the idea of preparing your fodder seeds in bleach make you turn up your nose? Are you concerned with creating the perfect balance of hydrogen peroxide and water for best sanitization? Well, fear no more as these steps are not required! We have recently concluded our testing of seed preparation with basic aeration and boy, are we impressed with the results! By simply soaking seeds in clean water with an aerating ceramic stone for 12 to 24 hours you can skip the sanitizing solution all together. Not only are we seeing superior mold protection throughout the growing process but we are also prompting germination while still in the soaking stage. With expedited germination a greater root mass is developed during the seven-day growing cycle.
