Leading the way in Fodder Research: FarmTek’s New Fodder Production Building
Hydroponic fodder production gets us excited. We have spent years researching, testing and improving our FodderPro Feed Systems, but we’re about to take research and development a step further. At our Dyersville, Iowa campus we’ve recently constructed a building dedicated to the production and research of hydroponic fodder, and this way we can improve upon the already impressive FodderPro Feed Systems and provide our customers with the information they need to grow a feed option that is truly the best.
The Fodder Building is a PermaTherm Insulated Metal Building, which provides a great space for producing fodder, and can be found in the FarmTek catalog. The building is constructed with polystyrene panels that are laminated by two sheets of 26-gauge galvanized steel. The thermal insulation properties, combined with some simple environmental controls make these panels ideal for use in a fodder building. Our Fodder Building measures 25’ wide by 80’ long, and provides plenty of space for fodder production on a commercial scale. The building currently houses two FodderPro 3.0 Commercial Feed Systems that are each capable of producing up to 1,150 lbs. of fodder per day. Maintaining the perfect fodder-growing environment isn’t difficult, but it is certainly important for optimal growth. The Fodder Building features HVAC systems that keep temperatures between 70 to 75 degrees year-round and the humidity between 60 to 70 percent, and to further facilitate the growth of our fodder there is also full air exchange every 30 minutes.
Well, our next step is to install a ClearSpan™ Fabric Structure to house livestock, which will be introduced this fall. Integrating an on-site livestock facility into the testing process will allow our fodder specialists to take their already extensive research to the next level. With the introduction of livestock we’ll also be able to test supplemental seed mixes, potentially leading to balanced nutritional profiles for specific types of livestock. With the combination of the livestock, Fodder Building and FodderPro 3.0 Commercial Feed Systems, our goal is to create a detailed business plan to help farmers incorporate fodder into their existing operation and demonstrate the return on investment that the FodderPro 3.0 Commercial Feed Systems offer.
While the production of hydroponic fodder continues to be studied, FarmTek wants to ensure that we are at the forefront. The new Fodder Building enables us to conduct studies that can enhance the development of fodder systems, and in turn bring you a system that can save you money and improve your business.
